캠프 험프리스, 대한민국 – 서울시 강남구 수서동에서 발생한 교통사고에서 부상당한 스쿠터 운전자와 그의 가족들이 당시 응급조치를 했던 미군병사에게 감사를 전달하기 위해 금요일 K-16 비행장을 방문했다.
미 제2전투여단 2-2항공대대에서 UH-60 헬기 정비병으로 근무하고 있는 노스 케롤라이나주 페이엇빌 출신인 클리포드 룩스툴 일병은 7월 17일 저녁 10시경 사고 당시 자전거를 타고 가고 있던 중 스쿠터와 택시의 교통사고를 목격하였다. 스쿠터에서 휘발유가 새는 것을 발견하고 나서 룩스툴 일병은 두 차량의 시동을 신속히 껐다. 그리고 나서 택시 운전자에게 119에 신고하라고 지시하였다.
룩스툴 일병은 부상당한 스쿠터 운전자를 안정시키면서 구급대가 도착할때까지 운전자의 부상부위를 살폈다. 몇몇 부상부위를 확인한 후 룩스툴 일병은 스쿠터 운전자를 안심시키고 편안하게 유지하였다. 구급대가 도착한 후엔 룩스툴 일병은 구급대를 도와 부상당한 스쿠터 운전자를 구급차에 옮겨 태웠고 그의 개인정보 및 연락처를 출동한 경찰에게 제공하였다.
룩스툴 일병 소속부대 소대 부사관인 코리 스미스 병장은 “룩스툴 일병은 아주 훌륭한 병사이다. 그는 항상 옳바른 일을 하는데 믿음직 스럽다,” 며 “병사들에게 부여된 지식과 훈련이 그대로 보여지는 고무적인 일이다.”라고 말하였다.
사건후 2주동안 룩스툴 일병은 지역 병원에 연락하여 스쿠터 운전자의 상태를 확인하고 싶었으나 확인할 수는 없었다.
저는 단지 그를 다시 만나고 싶었고 그가 괜찮은지 확인하고 싶었다,” 룩스툴 일병은 말했다.
가족들과 룩스툴 일병은 K-16비행장에서 만나 선물을 교환했다.
스쿠터 운전자의 어머니는 가족들을 대신하여 룩스툴 일병에게 나전칠기 연필통을 선물하였다. 룩스툴 일병의 소속대대 대대장과 중대장은 방문한 가족들에게 부대 상징 주화를 선물 하였다. 룩스툴 일병은 방문 가족들에게 세인트 크리스토퍼 기도상 주화를 선물하였다.
Korean family thanks 2ID Soldier for providing aid after crash
CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – An injured Korean scooter driver and his family visited K-16 Friday to meet and thank a U.S. Army Soldier for his actions after witnessing a vehicle accident in the area of Suseo-dong Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
Pfc. Clifford A. Rookstool, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, a UH-60 helicopter repairer with 2nd (Assault) Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, was riding his bicycle when he witnessed a vehicle accident involving a scooter and taxi on July 17 around 10 p.m. After noticing a fuel leak coming from the scooter, Rookstool responded by quickly turning off the engines to both vehicles. He then directed the driver of the cab to call 119.
Rookstool began reassuring the injured driver of the scooter and checking for injuries while waiting for medical personnel to respond. After noticing several injuries, Rookstool began providing comfort and keeping the driver of the scooter calm. Once medical personnel arrived Rookstool assisted them in loading the injured driver of the scooter into the ambulance and then provided his information to the responding police.
“Pfc. Rookstool is a great Soldier. You can always count on him to do the right thing,” said Sgt. Corey R. Smith, Rookstool’s platoon sergeant. “It is inspiration to see a Soldier put in effect the training and knowledge he has been given.”
For the next two weeks, Rookstool attempted to contact local hospitals to ascertain the condition of the scooter driver but was unsuccessful.
“I just wanted to meet him and see if he was ok,” said Rookstool.
The meeting was held on K-16 and included the exchanging of gifts. The mother presented Rookstool with a sea shell pencil case on behalf of their family. Rookstool’s battalion commander and company commander presented the family with coins. Rookstool presented the family with a piece of the wrecked scooter a Saint Christopher prayer coin.
