2nd Infantry Division welcomes new commander

CAMP CASEY, Korea – The 2nd Infantry Division conducted a change of command ceremony June 24 on Indianhead Field, Camp Casey to bid farewell to Maj. Gen. Edward C. Cardon and welcome Maj. Gen Thomas S. Vandal.

During the ceremony, Cardon thanked his Soldiers, his allies and the community for their hard work and support to the division.

¡°The strength of the Warrior Division is our U.S. and KATUSA Soldiers, their Families, and the many outstanding U.S. and Korean civilians who support the 2nd Infantry Division,¡± said Cardon.  ¡°Thank you all for your dedicated service to the Warrior Division, the Army, and the great ROK-U.S. Alliance.  Thank you for answering the call to duty and serving the nation, both the United States and Korea.  Know that your country is proud of your service and appreciates your sacrifice.¡±

"To our ROK Army partners – I am especially excited by our advances in combined training, interoperability and advancing combined operational concepts from Soldier through Division level,¡± said Cardon.  ¡°Your vision, courage, passion, dedication to duty and professionalism are inspiring, and I see continued greatness as we grow even more capable together in the future.¡±

¡°To our ROK Community partners, we are stronger than ever,¡± said Cardon.  ¡°No two nations enjoy the close bonds we share. We are grateful for all that you do for the Warrior Division.   For decades your efforts and generosity have helped ensure that our Soldiers and families are welcomed here in the land of the morning calm.¡±

After inspecting his new troops and accepting the division¡¯s colors from Cardon, Vandal vowed to maintain the division¡¯s level of readiness and continue to build on the relationship forged with the division¡¯s ROK allies over the last 60 years.

¡°Over the last 63 years, the 2nd Infantry Division has been a part of security on the ROK Peninsula, and we remain committed to maintain and enhance one of America¡¯s strongest and most enduring alliances – between the United States and the Republic of Korea,¡± said Vandal.

Vandal affirmed his desire to strengthen the ROK-U.S. Alliance through innovative, realistic, tough combined training, while also focusing on 2ID Families and being good neighbors with the surrounding Korean community.

¡°We will continue to strengthen our combined capabilities to provide for the security of the Korean Peninsula and stability of the region,¡± said Vandal.  ¡°Our priorities will not change and remain directly linked to the U.S. Forces Korea and the alliance¡¯s objectives. We will continue to ensure that our readiness and ability to ¡®Fight Tonight¡¯ is never compromised.¡±
